Our blog this year picks out some remarkable new instruments for drummers of the future. As Starland Music specialises in equipment for the classroom and practice rooms, the prevailing logic demands that there should now be more digital kits than acoustic ones. Relatively silent practice is a key requirement for most teachers. Fortunately the new wave of digital kits are much more sophisticated, combining the demands for modern music rhythms and power, but enabling the student to learn the traditional skills of dynamic drumming. Sensitive drum heads also come with better brains . . . .
Technology keeps marching on to improve how we can capture and transmit our performances. As an education supplier, we do not cover the most expensive studio equipment for professional users, but we aim to provide high quality versions of the top gear at a fraction of the price - recognising the usual budgetary restrictions! Having said that, top brands like Shure, Yamaha, AKG and others like to be very competitive, and often release models which are VERY much like their pro versions, and we show a few new arrivals here, together with some newcomers from budget brands too . . .
For the sixth year running, the humble ukulele has topped the list for "Students' first instrument" taking over from the mighty recorder. Starland Music's advisory team have specialised in selecting models (and their are MANY) that are suitable for the classroom, and there has been a shift away from the popularity of the Mahalo brand towards the Octopus range. Coinciding with a huge modernisation of the factories, the latest Octopus ukuleles and guitars are very definitely our first choice, and we have featured here some of the latest newcomers. The major software houses (Steinberg, Sibelius, Sudio one and Mixcraft) continue to develop their programs, with small tweaks and improvements each year, but these tend to go un-noticed and we highlight a few here. In contrast, the whole world knows when there are new Apple computers (!) and we supply only the very latest versions when we fit out a Music IT suite.
