Our gallery of French Horn - Single

There are many configurations for the French horn: a full double horn (see next gallery) is essentially two instruments in one, as it will have two full sets of tubing, one side pitched in Bb and the other in F. This enables the instrument to cover the full 4-octave range. The compensating horn is similar, but has a full Bb side and additional tubing to lower the pitch to F. The advantage is that it is lighter than a full double horn, but on the minus side it will not have as accurate an intonation as the full double horn. Single horns are pitched in either the higher Bb or the lower F.

In the U.K., the majority of teachers favour the F horn for beginners, to encourage the development of tone quality. However, some teachers prefer the Bb instrument for beginners, as this will favour accuracy of pitch.
