Adolphe Sax, famous for his creation of the saxophone, also established the Tenor Horn. There were three styles of tenor horn: the first was the over-the-shoulder design where the bell pointed backwards. This was used by marching bands to help soldiers keep time. The second type was built in a vertical position, and the third in a forward-facing position. Both of these produced better sound projection as far as the concert hall audience was concerned.

  The modern tenor horn is shorter and more compact, while maintaining its intonation and projection, and is still regarded as a key component to the brass band.
