These are hollowed blocks of wood with a range of higher and lower tones in the sections shaped by the slits in the top.  You play them by tapping the drum surface with special soft rubber beaters. Sometimes called Gato Drums, they are popular in many countries throughout the Americas, Africa and Asia.
