The A clarinet's usual territory is within the symphony orchestra.  Its pitch is a semi-tone below the Bb clarinet and is slightly longer. The A clarinet certainly benefits the player when performing challenging pieces that have been set in a key suitable for the violins, as it helps to eliminate some of the most tricky keys that would otherwise appear for the Bb instrument.
