They've done it to the flute, and now they've done it for young would-be trombonists. What are we talking about? Long and short arms of course - making it possible for all to reach for the tunes! Some children are fascinated with the trombone, particularly as it doesn't have any valves (like a trumpet), and it seems so magical that a note can be produced by simply sliding a length of tubing as opposed to pressing any keys or valves. Young players have now been given the chance to play this fine instrument, as this model has a clever little device that adjusts the thumb button and finger ring, accommodating any size hands.
How does it work? Without giving away too many of Yamaha's secrets, it's all to do with the ascending valve. If the trombone is played in the 'open' position, then the full length of the Bb tubing is used but, (and here's the clever bit) by pressing the lever, the key of the trombone ascends a step, eliminating the need for the 6th and 7th slide position. Another question that may spring to mind is the effect that this may have on the balance of the instrument, but you can rest assured that Yamaha have thought about this and have not only shortened the trombone but also improved its balance. No question, it's a great slide forward!
