A full Double French Horn is essentially two instruments in one, and features two full sets of tubing, one side pitched in Bb and the other in F. This enables the instrument to cover the full 4-octave range.
The compensating horn is similar, but has a full Bb side and additional tubing to lower the pitch to F. The advantage is that it is lighter than a full double horn, but on the minus side it will not have as accurate an intonation as the full double horn.
