Yamaha's top of the line 'Arius' digital piano, the YDP-165 employs technologies handed down from the acclaimed 'Clavinova' series, and provides the player a solid 'GH3' key action, and rich tones,

That said, you would be surprised by just how good this sounds and feels but with the ever increasing range of digital pianos, does the YDP165 bring anything new?

Well, value it has to be said as features at this price point include a healthy 192-notes of polyphony and a 2-track 'practice' recorder. More than this, the sound technology found within this model relies on the lovely 'CFX concert grand piano voice' sampling method which provides a rich, authentic piano tones, with plenty of acoustic-like characteristics. In fact, the piano tones have been meticulously recorded (sampled) from Yamaha's CF111 9ft concert grand! Any of the ten onboard voices are played from the improved Graded Hammer (GH3) keyboard which is a heavier action than other Arius models lower in the range, and therefore more suited to accomplished players who appreciate a more authentic key 'action'.

USB compatible (for those who wish to compose with computer music programs such as Sibelius), the YDP165 is built well too and has a full compliment of pedals (with half-pedalling) and full backboard making the instrument look 'solid'. And of course is available in various colour finishes Black Walnut, Rosewood, White Ash or White.

With ten sounds onboard and usual effects (reverb & chorus), the YDP165 has seen an update in the speaker department with revised amplifiers and Yamaha's very clever 'IAC' (Intelligent Acoustic Control). This now brings to the table the 'Tone Escape' outlet for improved clarity and volume. With a healthy 20watts of speaker power (and no outputs for further amplification), this underlines the fact that the YDP165 could be used happily in smaller venues such as a classroom or Music Department, as well as the home.

The YDP165 is a lovely model and, whilst not a Clavinova, it is in many ways a worthy contender in the entry-level / mid-range digital piano arena.
