This rainstick is made by hand ane by traditional methods in Peru. It is 50 cm in length and each one is decorated individually so no two rainsticks are the same.
In Essensce the rainstick is a hollowed out piece of wood which is then filled with a gravel-like material. The ends are then sealed which creates an interesting and versatile percussion instrument - when moved it really does sound like rain!
Originally thought to have been used by the Aztecs to bring about rainstorms, the instrument today is more likely to be found in a school percussion trolley or as a curiosity.
A nicely made, individual and traditional instrument, it would also make a lovely gift.
