The piccolo is the highest-pitched instrument in the flute family and because of this it can sound a little shrill to the ears.

However, with the YPC32, Yamaha have succeeded in producing a warmer-sounding instrument and, like the C flutes, the piccolo also has the split E mechanism, which enables the player to reach the E in the third octave.
