Widely used in jazz music, the vibraphone has also become popular in concert bands, orchestras and percussion groups. The tone is flexible enough to blend with other musical instruments and can be used effectively to accompany instrumental solos or vocal groups.

The Vibes' characteristic vibrato is produced when the motor driven fans located beneath the note bars and in the tops of the resonators revolve, making a vibrating sound. A damper pedal is also fitted, which works just like a piano's sustain pedal.
