A beginner recorder player usually starts on a descant recorder, and often moves on to a tenor recorder, as this uses the same fingering, so it is very easy to pick up and play.
The main difference is size, as it is quite a bit larger than a descant, so a player will have to learn to stretch to reach all of the holes. Quite often there is an extra C/C# key added on, making the bottom holes much easier to reach.
