Pronounced 'Clah-vay', this instrument may have origins in other cultures, but became adopted in Cuba and associated with Latin rhythms. The smaller versions are often called clavijas and some sets are slightly different sizes. Deceptively loud, this pair of rounded wooden rods can be used in several Latin rhythms.

Hold one (the clave or male) lightly in your upturned hand, and hit the middle of the rod with the other (striker or female).
